About Us

Our

Mission

Road to Mafraq partners with grassroots movements to increase access to education for children impacted by conflict in the Middle East. Our current efforts focus on supporting Syrian and Iraqi refugees living in Jordan.

Our Priorities

education

Over 13 million children across the Middle East have had their education disrupted due to violent conflict.  That’s why we’re working to increase access to education for children whose dreams have been caught in the crossfire of war across Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere in the Middle East by helping to fund educational initiatives for refugee children. Our focus includes funding the development, maintenance, and expansion of schools and extra-curricular educational programming serving refugee children.

reconciliation

We invest intentionally in programs that, in addition to their traditional academic curriculum, teach children healthy conflict-resolution skills and facilitate peace building across different religious and national identities. Because many of these children have witnessed violence as a means of conflict-resolution, it is important to teach them healthy approaches to resolving peer-to-peer conflict from a young age, equipping them to be peaceful and effective leaders in their families, communities, and nations as they grow.

Our Partners

Mafraq Academy

Mafraq Academy

Mafraq Academy is located in the northern Jordanian town of Mafraq. Over the past four and a half years, the city’s population of 70,000 Jordanians has more than doubled due to the influx of Syrian refugees flooding across the border. Although Syrian children are technically allowed to attend the Jordanian government schools, there are so few spaces available to accommodate them, it is estimated that 3 out of 5 children will never have the opportunity to attend Jordanian schools. Mafraq Academy serves over 150 Syrian children grades K – 3, helping them to learn reading, writing, Arabic, and math skills, despite their inability to attend formal schooling. A fun summer school program is also offered to keep learning and critical thinking skills sharp over the summer months. We’re currently working to help the school build a playground for the students, as there are few safe spaces for the children to play and develop in their neighborhood. To see the kids of Mafraq Academy at their first day of school, check out this quick video!
Helping Refugees in Jordan

Helping Refugees in Jordan

Refugee children living in the barren desert of eastern Jordan have few opportunities for formal schooling, leaving their future opportunities bleak. Through our partner organization Helping Refugees in Jordan, we support our partner school provide remedial education classes to nearly 100 children ages 5 – 16! Many of these children have not been to school in 3-4 years, while some have never even been. The program helps these students catch back up to their appropriate grade level and make up for some of the years they have missed.
Collateral Repair Project

Collateral Repair Project

In the Hashemi Al Shimali neighborhood of East Amman, Jordan, the refugee population is swelling with Iraqi and Syrian families of all different backgrounds — Sunni, Shia, Christian, and other religious minorities. Families want to send their children to school, but so often just the cost to purchase uniforms and school supplies is prohibitive to the families being able to enroll their children in the free education offered to them by the Jordanian government. For just $100, a child can receive the necessary supplies to be able to enroll and attend school for an entire year! We’re working with our partner organization, the Collateral Repair Project, to help support these children and provide them with the tools they need to continue their education and give them hope for the future. For a glimpse into the lives of the children served through this program, view this short film.
